SHORTERVILLE … Ann Smith Barnes, a Shorterville resident, passed away Friday morning, August 20, 2021, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. He is 90.

Funeral services for friends and family will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, August 23, 2021, at Adoniram Baptist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Otis Derrah officiating and a eulogy to be given by David Money. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations manages the arrangements. The family will receive friends following the funeral services. Social and mask distance guidelines will be followed.

Flowers will be received or memories can be made at the Alzheimer’s Resource Center, PO Box 1170, Dothan, AL 36302.

Mrs. Barnes was born and raised in Henry County, daughter of the late William Howard Smith and Flossie Mae Williams Smith. He lived in the Barnes Community of Henry County all his adult life. Mrs. Barnes is a member of Adoniram Baptist Church and the Barnes Homemakers Club. He served as an officer on the Henry County Extension Homemakers Council and an officer of the National Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary. Mrs. Barnes was preceded by the deaths of two sisters Martha Craft and Jean Bearden.

Surviving relatives include her husband of seventy-three years, James Lawrence Barnes; two daughters, Pam Thomas (Jim), Dothan; and Linda Waters (Bob), Birmingham; a son, Dale Barnes (Elaine), Abbeville; a sister, Janice Smith, Abbeville; his mother-in-law, Flora Smith, Cordele, GA; a sister, Gabby Cannon, (Phil), Vienna, GA; a brother, William S. Smith (Stacey), Vienna, GA; eight grandchildren, Jeff Waters (Misty), Philip Waters (Jill), Clay Barnes, Brooks Barnes (Sheri), Lauren Benak (Joseph), Maribeth Thomas, Cade Thomas and Taylor Thomas; thirteen grandchildren.

Serving as active pallbearers will be grandchildren.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Ruth Lawrence and Rebecca Murry for the loving care and kindness shown to Mrs. Barnes during her illness.
